Is Medicare even worth considering when considering weight loss plans? There is no doubt that Medicare can help with some of the costs of weight loss, such as doctor visits and medications. For many seniors, Medicare is their only source of medical care. Yet, Medicare does not cover all of the costs involved in weight loss. In fact, Medicare Part A (Health Insurance) will only pay for the hospitalization expenses and in-patient care that help people lose weight safely, if at all.

One of the questions frequently asked about Medicare and weight loss programs is whether or not the Government pays any part of the cost of participating in a weight loss program. The answer to this question is no. Medicare does not pay anything for the extra weight. This includes both medical costs and non-medical costs associated with putting on weight. The only part that the Government does contribute to is the Medicare Part A premium, since it is based on income.

Medicare does cover some of the expenses involved in other weight loss programs. Medicare Part B covers the expenses for some of the additional benefits provided to senior citizens. Medicare Part C, the Medicare Advantage Plan does cover some of the excess weight that individuals would need to lose before taking advantage of the Government funded Medicare part B premium.

So, does Medicare cover weight loss programs? Not necessarily. You must consider each of the above options for yourself. There are some medications that are covered under the Medicare part A policy, which means they will be covered by Medicare pay as well. But, you must also consider the additional costs involved in the extra medications and the costs of the in-house weight loss services that will be provided to you.

If you have Medicare coverage through private insurance, you will not be eligible for some of the extras. If you do have medicare coverage, the list of medications that are covered in the Medicare part b "medicare supplement" is very long.
